Superb Scriban chest of drawers of Nantes, made in the rules of art in the eighteenth century during the reign of Louis XVI. This high quality furniture is made of mahogany, amaranth, lemon and boxwood veneer.
In the lower part we observe two large identical drawers along the whole length, overhung by two smaller drawers. Their fronts are equipped with a magnificent and rare moiré mahogany, surrounded by a lemon tree fillet framed by a strip of mitered amaranth in the corners. In the center of each drawer, we find a finely carved bronze entrance representing animals, arabesques and a beaded garland. The original locks in working condition are accompanied by their chiseled key. Brass Louis XVI drawer handles finish off these drawers.
On each side of this prestigious piece of furniture we discover amounts with a square base comprising 3 stopped flutes and underlined by a fine moulding. The whole rests on 4 refined turned legs.
This Scriban chest of drawers has a beautiful flap in the upper part, the center of which is made of moiré mahogany and shaped like a butterfly wing. Around it, a boxwood fillet and then an amaranth band have a mitered mahogany wire surround. The top is composed of an identical veneer, as well as the sides with two panels.
The original lock on the flap is in working order. The entrance also dates from the design of the furniture.
The opening of the flap is done on important brass hinges. This one is maintained in its horizontal position by two iron compasses of origin said to kneel. The interior is covered with a leather of sheep color wine with cold vignette, golden vignette and central motif. This leather is new. The interior part is in solid mahogany with a slide in the center accessing a secret cache. The bottom part is on an oak frame. In the center two niches are surrounded on each side by 3 drawers of the same size whose fronts are in solid mahogany and the lens knobs are in original brass. The sides and bottoms of the drawers, assembled with dovetails, are in oak. Note that the dust covers between the drawers are on the entire depth of the furniture.
A true testimony to the know-how of 18th century cabinetmakers, this 250 year old scriban chest of drawers will charm you with its marquetry and the warm tones of the mahogany species, which will fit perfectly into a contemporary decoration.
