This Louis XIV period table rests on a turned boxwood base. It opens with a drawer in the front, and the top is made of fruitwood. A very attractive drop handle in wrought iron allows the drawer to be opened. The use of boxwood for the uprights and the H-shaped stretcher is extremely rare. Its very blond, warm, and appealing wood was chosen with great care at the time, which has allowed this table to age beautifully and reach us in excellent condition. Boxwood was once primarily used for making small precision objects, musical instruments, tools, and small hardware for furniture. Due to the shrub's extremely slow growth, its trunk rarely exceeds 10 centimeters in diameter, which precluded its use for making large pieces of solid wood furniture. On the other hand, its exceptional density and fine grain made it the preferred material for turners, cabinetmakers, and sculptors. Late 17th or early 18th century.
Tabletop dimensions: 91 cm x 58 cm, height 76 cm.
