    Eugène Cornu (?-1875)
    Pedestal table
    Polychrome bronze and onyx
    19th century

Spectacular pedestal table in brown patina bronze, gilded, silvered and galvanized, decorated with lion's head, acanthus leaf, shell, pine cone, rose and ivy. The circular top in Algerian onyx, covered with ivy and surrounded by a double patina frieze, stands on a tripod base with a claw foot and a spacer topped by an onyx top decorated with pearls and a bronze flame.

Eugène Cornu was a French sculptor and bronze-maker, whose date of birth is unknown. He died in 1875. He first worked as a draughtsman, before taking over the management of Maison Tahan. In 1858, he became creator and director of the Compagnie des Marbres et Onyx d'Algérie of A.Pallu & Co. Gustave Viot then became the owner of these mines, and Eugène Cornu continued to work with the company. They would create luxurious items combining onyx, bronze and champlevé enamels, until the company was named "Société des Onyx d'Algérie E. Cornu et Cie". Cornu et Cie". The company also produced works based on models by Albert Carrier-Belleuse, Charles Cordier and Louis-Alfred Barrias. After his death in 1875, the company was taken over by H. Journet, and the onyx mines in the Oran region continued to be exploited until the early 20th century.

Eugène Cornu took part in numerous World's Fairs, including those of 1862, 1871 and 1872 in London, and 1867 in Paris. At the latter, he was awarded a gold medal for an impressive pair of vases in onyx, bronze and enamel (signed G. Viot et Cie, Exposition de 1867, Eugène Cornu Inventeur).
