Cristal de Nancy refers to the products of Cristalleries de Nancy, a factory founded in 1920 by crystal and luxury goods expert Jules Alexis Bayet, who had previously worked for Baccarat and Coty. This crystal works, located at 88 rue du Faubourg Saint-Georges in Nancy, initially specialized in the manufacture of luxury perfume bottles, responding to strong worldwide demand in the 1920s. Production soon expanded to include crystal vases, tableware and decorative objects.
The crystal works enjoyed notable success in the Art Deco period, employing several hundred people and collaborating with artists such as Auguste Houillon. It produced pieces in cut, color-lined and acid-etched crystal, often in limited editions. However, the economic crisis of 1929 led to its bankruptcy in 1931, followed by liquidation in 1935, with part of its equipment bought out by the Daum crystal works.
Today, Nancy crystal pieces are sought-after for their quality and Art Deco style, with specific signatures attesting to their origin. This long-forgotten crystal works is now being rediscovered thanks to dedicated books and collections.
