This seated young woman, protected by a long fur coat and her hair covered by an elegant toque, holds a carnival mask in her hands. The face is reminiscent of the miniature portrait attributed to Jean-Baptiste Le Prince (1734-1781) and offered for sale by Artcurial on 27.09.2023.
The coat and toque are neatly finished, and Diderot, who supported the painter from his first Salon, considered that the artist's main merit "is that of dressing well".
Jean-Baptiste Le Prince stayed in Russia between 1756 and 1763, bringing back a large number of drawings which he used when he applied to the Académie Royale, and which later contributed to the genre paintings and Russian landscapes for which he became famous.
