This charcoal drawing signed by artist Pierre St Sorny offers a stylized, expressive vision of a Provencal mas nestled in the landscape of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a famous artists' village in the South of France. The work is characterized by a rigorous graphic construction, playing on the tension of lines, architectural volumes and dynamic plant masses.
Through the contrast of black and white charcoal, St Sorny composes a modern, lively landscape, where trees, hills and tiled roofs interweave in a dense, almost musical harmony. This original drawing conveys both the architectural richness and natural force of Provence.
With its refined style, close to geometric abstraction, and its graphic power, this work is in line with the continuity of twentieth-century French modern art, at the crossroads of stylized landscape and expressive composition.
A rare piece for lovers of charcoal drawings, Provençal landscapes and great original 20th-century graphic works.
Born in Brussels, Pierre Saint-Sorny was surrounded by art from an early age. At the age of 18, he entered the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Attracted by light and color, in 1976 the artist decided to settle with his wife in Provence. Exhibited at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Provence in 2002, under the title La Provence de Pierre Saint-Sorny, the artist donated most of his Provençal work to the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Provence in Grasse.
