Launched on June 22, 1884, in La Ciotat, it made its maiden voyage on January 14, 1885, under the command of Captain Didier, on the Marseille-Suez-Mahé (Seychelles)-Réunion-Mauritius-Australia-New Caledonia route. The first modification occurred in 1887: the installation of electricity and the conversion of the poop deck into a music room. Paul Gauguin embarked on board on April 1, 1891, bound for Nouméa via Australia, arriving on May 12, 1891, before boarding the aviso Vire for Tahiti. In 1895, it underwent further modifications in La Ciotat, with the compound engine being replaced by a much more powerful triple-expansion engine. From 1892 to 1900, it served the Far East route. In 1901, it brought back General Voyron, returning from the China expedition, and the coffin of Prince Henri d'Orléans, who died in Saigon on August 9. Until 1913, it was used as a replacement vessel on various routes: Levant, La Plata, Australia. In 1913-1914, it served on the Madagascar route.
During the war, it was one of the few MM (Malagasy Marines) liners to experience no major incidents. On October 22, 1915, it embarked at Majunga the General Staff and the 3rd Company of the 1st Marching Battalion of Malagasy Riflemen, arriving in Bizerte on November 14. On May 11, 1916, it embarked at Majunga the 500 men of the 6th Somali Marching Regiment, arriving in Marseille on June 5 (53). Heavily worn out, it was decommissioned in 1919, then sold to Genoa for scrapping in February 1922. (1) and (16)
