Beautiful neoclassical engraving after Pierre Claude Fr. DELORME (1783-1859) & Engraved by Jean Nicolas LAUGIER (1785-1875).
"Héro et Léandre", 1816.
The gilded wood frame is really very beautiful.
The white part of the sheet shows traces of humidity, which is not the case for the image.
Very fine quality engraving.

Hero and Leander lived on opposite shores of the Hellespont (today's Dardanelles Strait). On the European shore, in Sestos, lived the young and beautiful Hero, priestess of the temple of Aphrodite. Léandre, a young man from Abydos, a city on the Asian side, saw her during a festival dedicated to the goddess, and the two young men fell madly in love with each other. Léandre swam across the strait every night to enjoy the girl's company. To guide him on this dangerous crossing, Hero lit a torch on top of a tower. But one night, a storm arose, the torch went out and, his strength failing in the middle of the strait, Léandre drowned. His body was carried by the waves to the European coast, where Hero, discovering the death of her lover, threw herself into the sea and drowned herself.

In Istanbul, near the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, a tower known as the Leander Tower was built in the 18th century on the remains of a Byzantine fortress built in the 11th century by the Byzantine emperor Manuel Commnene, which closed off the Bosphorus with a chain stretching between the two shores.
