    Drawing by André Dutertre 1753 - 1842

The Egyptian expedition was decided upon at the beginning of March 1798 and entrusted to Bonaparte. Dutertre was fortunate to be hired as a member of the Commission des Sciences et des Arts as a draftsman. He began to add to his portfolio from the beginning of the voyage, sketching portraits of his fellow adventurers and leaving some drawings of the first stopover in Malta.
His activities in Egypt were numerous and diverse. Of course, Dutertre drew, that was his main goal: to gather the most complete documentation possible on all the facets of Egypt that he crossed. But he also participated in the sessions of the Institute of Egypt, of which he was a member, and took part in various commissions of inquiry on a wide variety of subjects: he had to deal with the installation of a theater in Cairo as well as with a report on the nilometer of the island of Raouda. He left on an exploration to the city of Suez and then went up the Nile to Aswan... Like most of the scientists, he returned to France only in the autumn of 1801.
