After devoting himself to the art of stained glass with the master glassmaker Jacques Grüber, he studied at the National School of Decorative Arts then at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, in André's studio. Devambez, from 1927 to 1929.
Taken prisoner in June 1940, he escaped and went to the free zone in Lyon. He will stay there for 18 months. Having gone underground, he can devote himself fully to painting.
It was in 1946, at the Galerie Carmine, that he had his first exhibition. This one is a complete success with the public and the critics, and particularly with Gertrude Stein. His painting interests other painters who invite him to participate in various Groups such as Poetry of the Real, Poetic Reality, The Three Dimensions (Durand Ruel).
In 1948, Bernard Buffet made a noticed and publicized entry into the world of painting, Maurice Buffet was then forced to give up the Parisian galleries, because of the risk of confusion. But should he change his name when he is already known…? Maurice Buffet persists: he will devote himself some time to the study of nature in order to free himself from any foreign influence and to deepen his vision of reality.
In 1955, he participated in the Salon Les Grands et les Jeunes today and this was his first mention at the Grand Prix of the City of Paris.
In 1958, he became a member of the National Society of Fine Arts, of which he became vice-president of the Painting Section.
From the 1960s, he increased his exhibitions in the provinces, in Paris and abroad: New York, Brussels, Bern, Tokyo ...
In 1977, he received the Puvis de Chavannes Prize from the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts.
In June 2001, an exhibition of works discovered in his studio after his death was organized at the Rappin-Gabillet gallery in Paris: “The paintings of Maurice Buffet, an artist who truly deserves to be recognized as a master, constitute a magnificent rediscovery for professionals and amateurs. »- Artcult (news archives), Maurice Buffet at the Rappin-Gabillet gallery July 1, 2001
