Pair of pastels of oval shape, representing two portraits of young elegant women, in evening dress.
The brunette, with a brown horn comb in her hair, Andalusian style, and a rosebud in her ear, is wearing a delicate plum silk dress, adorned with a collar of jewels, enhanced by a string of pearls.
The blond, the eye a little mutinous, in profile, the short and curly hair frizzy, retained by a headband of daisies, in the forehead. The black lace dress, fine, highlights a delicate neckline, and a gold necklace.
These pastels are signed C.PETIT and dated 1923 (or 29 ).

The pastel was probably invented in France and Italy at the end of the 15th century and was used by Leonardo da Vinci.
The pastel will be very popular from the seventeenth century, especially to evoke the rendering of fabrics, but also the delicacy of the art of the portrait, it is used by many painters like the very famous Charles Le Brun.
The golden age of pastel is undeniably the eighteenth century. used by Maurice Quentin de La Tour, the "prince of pastelists", or Chardin, Perronneau.
The Revolution will make fall this technique in disuse, vis-a-vis painting with oil.
It finds the golds, thanks to the Impressionists, to Edgar Degas, and Toulouse Lautrec, thanks also to the Nabis, such Edouard Vuillard. And finally, apogee at the end of the nineteenth century, with the symbolist movement, which perfectly illustrate Levy Dhurmer or Odilon Redon.
