Description: A rare and important coherent set of 13 original photographs dating from the late 19th century, taken in Jamaica under British administration.

This set documents with great documentary quality:

colonial official buildings (neoclassical and tropical architecture),
a hill station (probably in the Blue Mountains),
a colonial port with wooden wharves and sailing ships,
and most notably, a group of Black soldiers in uniform, identified as belonging to the 1st West India Regiment, the only Black regiment in the British Army.

The photographs exhibit perfect homogeneity in format, tone, and style, suggesting a body of work by a single photographer, within an administrative or military context.

The entire collection is highly probable to William Walker Whitehall Johnston (1835–1886), a British photographer active in the United Kingdom and the West Indies.

chronological correlation (Johnston's activity is known to have occurred before 1886),
geographic correlation (Jamaica/British Caribbean),
thematic correlation (architecture, landscapes, military documentation),
and direct comparison with a Johnston album held at the Beinecke Library (Yale University), which includes photographs of the 1st West India Regiment.

Historical Context
The 1st West India Regiment, established in 1795, was composed of Black soldiers serving in the British Army in the Caribbean. Photographs of this unit are rare and constitute important documents for colonial history.
