A polychrome ceramic vase or centerpiece depicting a lamassu, in the form of a winged, human-headed bull. Bohemian, by Gerbing and Stephan. Marked GT (S not visible) 1851 on the base; 1851? or circa 1880?
Lamassu, placed at the gates of Assyrian palaces or cities more than 3,000 years ago, served to protect the inhabitants and intimidate foreigners. Assyrian civilization was rediscovered by archaeologists around 1840. Many artifacts were brought to France around 1852-54 and exhibited at the Louvre. Following the success of these exhibitions, lamassu were produced by the Austrian pottery works Gerbing & Stephan (1801-1903).
