JEAN VAN DONGEN Ceramist
Born on November 8, 1883 in Delfshaven, a suburb of Rotterdam, Johan Leonardus Marie van Dongen was the sixth and last child of Joannes van Dongen and Helena Francisca Geurts.
After studying architecture, he arrived in Paris in 1904 and moved in with his brother at the Bateau-Lavoir. They frequented the "Au Lapin Agile" cabaret and Jean met Marie Louise Esnault, who sang there. During the First World War, he took refuge in the Netherlands in 1915 with his partner, and married her in Rotterdam on April 28, 19151. He spent the war in Rotterdam, declared a sculptor2. In 1917, he painted a portrait of his father, now in the "De Dubbelde Palmboom" museum in Delfshaven. He returned to France in late 1919 and settled in Marly-le-Roi in early 1920.
He is active in France and particularly in Marly-le-Roi, where he has his own workshop and kiln. He lived at 15 avenue de la gare, next door to Aristide Maillol, whom he met in 1922 and became a practitioner and friend. Owners of a large house, the couple rented a guest room in 1923 to George Gaylord Simpson, whose correspondence with his sister gives a description of the villa and an idea of the couple's lifestyle3.
For the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs, he created a 90 cm seated white dog for couturier Paul Poiret, which was placed on the terrace at the top of the stairs of the barge "Amours "4,5.
In 1936, he enlarged "La Montagne" for Maillol in his studio6.
His work as a ceramist is fairly confidential, and he worked in this field with Pablo Picasso, with whom he created two vases in 1929, which Picasso kept in his collection.
