This beautiful dish is typical of the Bérain-style decorations produced in Moustiers in the first quarter of the 18th century... Eric Amourdedieu, in the Académie de Moustiers book "Les faïences de Moustiers du XVIIe au XIXe siècle", writes about Bérain-style decoration:
"Bérain-style decoration, inspired by the ornamentalist Jean I Bérain, found applications in many areas of the decorative arts from the end of the 17th century and throughout the first half of the 18th century: marquetry (tortoiseshell by André Charles Boulle), tapestry (Gobelins) ... and, of course, ceramics. This majestic decor is characterized by its symmetry around a central figure surrounded by interlacing light lacework, in the spirit of the Italian Renaissance. Flat surfaces with geometric motifs (latticework) are sometimes used. The compositions are adorned with busts, caryatids inspired by Antiquity, and precious canopies. Animals (monkeys, birds, etc.) and grotesque or mythological figures add a touch of fantasy.
In ceramics, it enjoyed considerable success in Moustiers, where a number of major pieces were produced by the Clérissy factory in the first quarter of the 18th century.
The decoration is painted in blue monochrome. Among scrolls, curves, counter-curves and arabesques, beneath a canopy of trellis and drapery, is a central figure standing on a pedestal, framed on either side by a bust resting on a sheath. Slightly hollow and contoured, this oblong dish is adorned on the wing with an ironwork frieze and three or four parallel fillets along the rim.
In very good overall condition, this dish shows some wear to the enamel on the edge.
Early 18th century, Moustiers attributed to the Clérissy factory.
