I'm taking you on a journey into the world of the Sarreguemines earthenware factory
to show you a piece of the famous Faïencerie Obernai decor.
The famous Henri Loux gave his vision of Alsace and illustrated the region through this décor,
which, in 1902, presented scenes of Alsatian life and traditions,
as well as the region's various landmarks.
(56 drawings of sites, castles, villages and other monuments).
Note to purists: the design was submitted to the Faïencerie in 1902, and the first production run of the service took place in 1903.
I chose this cake dish, entitled "La veillée", to illustrate my point. Indeed, Loux evokes the habits and customs of Alsace.
Vigils and gatherings generally took place as follows: the women gathered to spin and embroider their trousseau around 5pm. A few hours later, the men would join them. In the middle of the evening, the young women went out, and it's the "Achtührlaufe" (the eight o'clock ballad) that is represented here. The girls sing and exchange puns with the young men, who often court them in a provocative manner. Back in the "Stuwà" (the cosy part of the house, the sitting area with the tiled "Kachelhoffà" stove), after dinner, stories are told.
At around 10 p.m., the night watchman announces the end of the vigil. The boys take the girls home. The new couples will be announced to the whole village during the Carnival celebrations, which also mark the end of the wake periods.

This is a magnificent piece, beautiful in its quality, and collectors will appreciate it:
the trademark is the brand name granted by Sarreguemines to the artist, associating
his name: Loux, à la faïencerie Utzschneider et Cie.
Here again, a number of renowned artists had obtained the right to sign their work. It was only when this service was reissued that the name of the "Obernai" decoration appeared, a name that was reissued until recently.
This rare and magnificent cake dish from the famous OBERNAI service, entitled "la veillée", is signed LOUX and marked LOUX - UTZSCHNEIDER et CIE,
the original design dates from 1902 (with the first pieces leaving the factory in 1903).
