Today, the Akhas reside in the mountains of China, where the government has assimilated them to the Hani, in Thailand, where they are included in the hill tribes (a term with a pejorative connotation that has been abandoned in favor of Hill People), in Laos, where they are called Lao sung, and in Myanmar (Burma), where they are called Kaw, or Akha-Ekaw.
