This very pretty ring features an oval-shaped amethyst, encircled by a row of marcasite stones. It is faceted and mounted in an openwork silver setting supported by a gold band. Amethyst is reputed to protect against drunkenness, a virtue derived from mythology: Bacchus was very persistent with the beautiful nymph Amethyst, who, frightened, called upon Diana. To save her from Bacchus, Diana transformed her into crystal. Furious that she had escaped him, Bacchus poured his cup of wine over the crystal, which immediately turned purple. Suddenly sober, he granted it the power to protect its wearer from drunkenness.
