An astonishing and rare caricature candlestick, in regula with a dark bronze and gilded patina, depicting the actor Frédérick Lemaître in his role in "La Lune", a famous 19th-century comedian known for his dramatic roles and expressive acting. The stooped posture, exaggerated face and treatment of the drapery place this piece in the tradition of theatrical and satirical representations of the late 19th century. The figure, in the round, supports a candlestick wick, the whole resting on a circular base. Beautiful original burnished patina with vestiges of gilding. Foundry mark "AB" under the base to be identified.
Height 26.8cm, width and depth approx. 7cm, diameter of base 11cm. Very good overall condition, with normal wear to the patina and a few age-related marks, and a small hole at the bottom of the wick. Approx. 1kg.
