A beautiful pair of "Return from Egypt" candlesticks, from the Roman-Consulate period, in gilt and chased bronze with fluted stems and adorned with three full-length figures of Egyptian women. The spherical candle holders are chased with friezes of Greek key patterns and palmettes. The round bases have a cyma molding chased with friezes of water leaves.
In excellent condition, with its original gilding.
This fine model of candlesticks is attributed to the bronze sculptor Claude Galle.
A drawing of them is held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This drawing comes from a catalog presenting Claude Galle's shop.
This drawing is listed in the reference work: Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel, "Vergoldete Bronzen" (Gilt Bronzes), 1986, on page 326, figure 5.1.7.
A set of four similar candlesticks was found at the Château de Malmaison, placed in Empress Josephine's bedroom (AN, AJ/19/1144, f° 1 v°, no. 837). They were returned to the Garde-Meuble (Royal Furniture Repository) on December 31, 1878, as part of a set of four (Arch. Mob. nat., M250, f° 93 v°, no. 55811).
An identical pair of candlesticks: Christie's Sale, November 26, 2020, lot 354.
