Large pair of candelabra baskets or empire centerpieces, in finely chiseled gilded bronze and patinated bronze.
Each of them consists of an imposing winged Victory whose carving of the wings, hands and hair is of great finesse.
These Victories, arms raised, support a large flared basket, openworked with a festoon and long lotus leaves.
From this basket emerge three winding acanthus leaves, the main stem of which forms an arm of light.
Each bobèche is decorated with a pattern of scales (small at the bottom, larger in the center). Cups with laurel leaf edging.

Each figure of Victory rests on a square-shaped base, in patinated bronze, embellished with decorative elements in gilded and chiseled bronze, applied, comprising:

• A wreath of laurel leaves tied with a ribbon bow, located on either side

• The Chariot of Apollo on stylized clouds on the facade.

A counter-pedestal, still in patinated bronze, highlights the base by adding a generous frieze of acanthus leaves in chased gilt bronze. The set rests on two front legs in the form of an imperial eagle standing on a sphere (symbolizing the empire dominating the world) and two rear legs in a simplified Corinthian half capital.

This model of winged victory with arms raised and spread apart is particularly used by Pierre Philippe Thomire during the Empire and the Restoration. A pair of candelabras delivered by Thomire and referenced in the national furniture:
Ref. Dumonthier, Lighting and heating bronzes from the Mobilier National - pl. 25 No. 2.

The layout of the sconces can be compared to two models:

• A pair of centerpieces in the Emperor's dining room at Malmaison, delivered by Thomire.

• another centerpiece related to Thomire is in the Fine Art Museum of San Francisco (illustrated in Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel, "Vergoldete Bronzen", 1986, p. 387, pl. 5.16.14).

Beautiful state of preservation, original gilding.

Attributed to Thomire et Cie.

First third of the 19th century.
