Pair of candelabra with allegorical figures in patinated bronze and gilded bronze, 19th century
An elegant pair of three-light candelabra in patinated bronze and finely chased and gilded bronze. Each candelabrum rests on a cylindrical base adorned with a rich frieze of vine leaves and grape clusters in gilded bronze.
The shafts feature remarkable allegorical figures crafted in bronze with a brown patina. One depicts a young woman draped in the classical style, in a graceful and expressive pose, while the other depicts a winged genius, a common symbol of Love or Inspiration in neoclassical iconography. The figures support with their arms a cluster of lamp arms featuring naturalistic decoration.
The three-light sconces bloom into large corollas of finely chiseled and gilded flowers and foliage, in a style inspired by late 18th-century designs and the Louis XVI aesthetic. The contrast between the figures’ dark patina and the brilliance of the gilding lends the piece great decorative appeal.
