A pair of small gilded and patinated bronze candlesticks decorated with putti, attributed to the workshop of Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810–1892), a famous 19th-century Parisian bronze castor.
Each candlestick features a delicate patinated bronze cherub seated on a sculpted base richly decorated with Rocaille-inspired scrollwork and foliage, finely chiseled and gilded with matte gold.
The flower-corolla-shaped bowl rests on an openwork shaft with an elegant asymmetrical curve, typical of the Napoleon III taste for reinterpreted Louis XV designs.
The contrast between the dark patina of the putti and the brilliance of the gilding lends the set great decorative appeal.
Stamped mark beneath the base: “BD 419.”
French work from the second half of the 19th century, produced by the Barbedienne workshop.
