Chased and gilded bronze candelabra with sphinxes and ram's heads, of fine chasing quality,
This pair of five-light candelabra features a triangular base with recessed sides centered on a shell and resting on three fluted console feet.
Three sphinxes punctuate the angles of the base and terminate in a leafy bracket resting on the central shaft. The latter is adorned with three emperor profiles in the antique style, framed by a leafy console, and gives rise to three opposing double volute branches ending in a ram's head.
The design of these candelabras, dating from the early 19th century, can be compared with the work of two great exponents of the arts at the end of the reign of Louis XIV, André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) and Jean I Bérain (1640-1711). The shape of these candelabras recalls the models of candelabras and chandeliers designed by Boulle and published in Paris.
