Pair of Louis XV-style large gilded bronze Flambeaux based on models by Juste Aurele Meissonnier (1695-1750), architect, ornamentalist and goldsmith to King Louis XV. He is considered one of the leading figures of the Rococo style.
Pair of spectacular rocaille bronze Grand flambeaux finely chased and gilded
Parisian workmanship of the highest quality, the perfection of execution and the pronounced, harmonious forms of its curves make this a piece of great presence.
Dimensions: Height 32 cm Diameter Base 16 cm
Condition report: Very good condition, nice original matte and shiny gilding. Minimal traces of use and age.
Architecture of the Candlestick: With its large size, a beautiful Baluster shaft with deep moldings and Crosses and stylized acanthus leaves and foliage and shells, all incorporated in a permanent naturalistic movement typical of the Rocaille Louis XV, sits at the top of a beautiful swirling spigot richly decorated with acanthus leaves and fixed bobéche decoration integrated with crosses so as not to cut off the decoration in its movement, inner dish for candle drip.
Mounted with a wide screw thread as in the 17th century (see photo).
This screwed spindle is set on a very wide, round, tiered base with three handsome "Ressauts" and rich decorations of stylized acanthus leaves and various foliage and moldings (flat, hollow, round) and crosses, always in constant upward and downward motion, typical of the upward and downward movements of Meissonnier's models.
The size of this model sets it apart from other 19th-century models. Marks RR under the bases and N on the screw.
Period: Louis XV style, late 19th c. Circa 1880.
Provenance: Private Collection Paris.
