Alexandre Kostanda - Born 1921-2017

Alexandre Kostanda is a well-known French ceramist.

He was initiated in Louis Giraud's workshop in the village of Vallauris, a town known for its pottery tradition.

After the Second World War, he taught pottery in the Burgundy region and became teacher to the four founders of the Accolay ceramic workshops.

In 1949, Kostanda returned to Vallauris to take over the direction of the studio of his former teacher, Louis Giraud.

Four years later, he opened his own studio in Vallauris.

His ceramics are known for blending Vallauris clay and Cluny stoneware, which withstands higher firing temperatures.

His designs are often created in colors close to the natural hue of the clay, and his motifs are floral or abstract, often painted by his mother, Irène, a former decorator for "au Ripolin" and Giraud.

Kostanda's style is characterized by balanced proportions and delicate craftsmanship.
