Unusual table lamp by Danish ceramist Lauritz Adolph Hjorth. This black-glazed ceramic table lamp features several nocturnal animals. Signed below.
Lauritz Adolph Hjorth (1831-1912) was a Danish ceramist whose work was highly sought-after.
Early in his career, Lauritz Adolph Hjorth created utilitarian objects, including water coolers, flower pots and milk jugs. In 1862, he began to concentrate on decorative vases and figurines whose style and ornamentation refer to antique and Nordic motifs. He also decorated his pieces with floral and animal elements characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. Hjorth's terracottas were abundantly represented at world's fairs, and his work was widely distributed and appreciated internationally. Around 1900, his production included Jugendstil vases, many of which were made in black burnt terracotta. Lauritz Adolph Hjorth's production was strongly inspired by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, whose statuettes he produced.
