Jenna Basso Pietrobon's pair of ceramic table lamps, Brick 02, is part of her larger project "Brick Block, Tick Tock."
Brick Block, Tick Tock explores themes of silence, reconstruction, and gender equality, prompting viewers to reflect on the systemic silence of women and the transformative potential of reconstruction, both personally and societally. Through light, the project illuminates contemporary issues, many of which have been experienced by the artist. This multifaceted collection is a gestalt, encompassing lighting, furniture, vases, photography, installation, performance, audio, and printmaking. Interspersed with symbols, tributes, and innovations, the work confronts oppression and envisions a future based on equality.
Brick Block, Tick Tock draws inspiration from the heritage of Basso Pietrobon’s two grandfathers, both from Veneto, Italy: one a bricklayer and construction worker, the other a ceramicist. The ten years Ms. Pietrobon spent working in the construction industry in New York City further exposed her to the pervasive realities of gender-based violence and systemic inequality. These personal and professional experiences, combined with her reflections on the complex and controversial relationship between artists Carl Andre and Ana Mendieta, became the foundation for this symbolic project. Inspired by Jasper Johns’ famous phrase, “Take an object. Make something of it. Make something else of it,” the brick sculptures are accompanied by photographs and paintings that reproduce these dimensional forms. Bricks are used for the concept of building and constructing a house, but I'm also interested in using these building forms to create objects for the home itself, such as lamps, tables, and wall dividers.
