Firangi-type sword with a khanda hilt
India, 17th century
A long, slightly curved European Damascus steel blade with a central fuller, and a khanda-type steel hilt extended by a basket-shaped guard adorned with engraved motifs.
This type of weapon, combining an antique European blade with an Indian hilt, is emblematic of the exchanges between the West and India in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Portuguese, Italian, or German blades were imported via Goa and then locally fitted onto Indian hilts, as seen here.
