Dagger called Koumia. Morocco, North Africa. Early 20th century circa 1930/1940. Slightly curved wrought-iron blade, blackened wooden handle with silver trim, featuring the hand of Fatima on the face. In Arabic, "khamsa" means "five", referring to the five fingers of the hand. It is often associated with Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet Mohammed in Islam, hence its other name "Fatima's hand". This symbol is believed to bring blessings, power and strength, while protecting against the evil eye. Silver-trimmed scabbard, engraved throughout. In good condition, with traces of use. Length 43.5 cm.
