Gilded wood mantel mirror. Rich and elegant Louis XVI-style model with ribbon-wrapped moldings, a string of pearls and a ribbon bow on the pediment. Superb, very fine moldings; original beveled glass. Late 19th century (1880-90).
This type of decoration is typical of the period when ornamentalists, tired of the excesses of pastiche under Louis Philippe and Napoleon III, decided to pay homage to the aesthetic perfection of the 18th century by returning to a stylistically pure Louis XVI (or Louis XV) style and decor, but with the perfection of 19th-century technical means. The mirror bears the gilder's mark on the back (Philippe Michelet 2 rue Condillac, Grenoble).
Our mirror is a fairly large format (a rich model, but still of reasonable size and easy to place), which lends itself well to natural use as a mantelpiece top, or for hanging. Beautiful frame with bold moldings (10cm wide). A fine, large piece, of superior quality and highly decorative.
Gold leaf gilding in excellent condition, cleaned by our gilder, original antique glass.
Width : 79cm
Total height: 150cm (133cm without bow)
