A very elegant carved wood and gilded stucco mirror made in the 19th century in a particularly successful interpretation of early 18th-century styles. The whole presents a remarkably balanced composition, where the classical rigor inherited from Louis XIV and Regency models dialogues with the freedom of Louis XV rocaille decoration.

The frame is structured by a continuous rush in slight relief, around which fine leafy clasps, formed of stylized acanthus leaves, seem to wrap and give rhythm to the frame. This motif, taken directly from the decorative vocabulary of the early 18th century, lends the whole an elegant, perfectly mastered framework. The corners are richly decorated with openwork rocaille shells, accompanied by scrolling foliage and supple, lively foliage. These elements testify to a free but respectful interpretation of the Louis XV style, with a particularly successful search for movement and lightness.

The glazing beads are underlined by a finely molded molding adorned with an interlacing motif of alternating pearls, composed of a succession of elongated ovals linked by soft scrolls punctuated by pearls in relief. This motif, inherited from classical ornamentation of antique inspiration, provides a refined contrast between structure and decoration, and enriches the reading of the frame with a subtle play of rhythms.

The pediment is one of the highlights of this mirror. Entirely openwork, it develops into a composition of asymmetrical scrolls, slender volutes and broad acanthus leaves, treated with great lightness. In contrast to some of the more massive productions of the 19th century, this one stands out for its airy, fluid character, evoking in places an Italian-inspired rococo taste, here interpreted with finesse and balance.

The sculpture is beautifully executed, with well-modeled volumes, clear hollows and legible motifs. The whole retains its antique gilding, with a warm patina and the wear and slight alterations of use that contribute to its authenticity. The mirrors are old.

This mirror captivates with its decorative presence, both rich and light, and the accuracy of its stylistic interpretation. It is a fine example of quality Napoleon III production, where the decoration is not simply applied, but is part of a genuine overall composition.
