Under a changing sky, imbued with golden light and melancholy, this 19th-century oil on canvas transports us to a pastoral scene imbued with romantic charm. A cow is drinking beside a small body of water, while in the background stands a massive tower resembling a forgotten fortress, overgrown with ivy and bathed in the warm light of a setting sun.
The work is monogrammed "E.M." in the lower left-hand corner, and the old handwritten inscription on the back of the stretcher, in pencil, "Lake of Scotland", gives us a valuable indication of the landscape's inspiration. Indeed, the whole evokes the misty, wild atmospheres of the Highlands, between romantic ruins and untamed nature.
