Originally from Périgord, Alfred Lavergne went to Paris in 1919 where he trained at the School of Fine Arts in the studio of Fernand Cormon. After settling in Montmartre in the 1920s, he moved to the Montparnasse district in 1932, at 12, rue du Moulin-de-Beurre, in a workshop that he did not leave until 1962, with the expropriation of the workshops on rue du Moulin-de-Beurre.
Lavergne exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants for thirty years from 1921 and he was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, where he obtained an honorable mention in 1941, a silver medal in 1951 and a gold medal in 1959.
Our painting represents a view of Santeuil in theVal d'Oise. We know of him another view of Santeuil which was purchased by the State in 1959 and deposited in 1962 at the Mauriac district court (Cantal).
