Jan Kobell the Elder (1756-1833) was a painter and engraver from a family of Dutch artists originally from Rotterdam. He was active in Rotterdam in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Jan Kobell the elder painted pre-romantic landscapes with a fine yellow light under the influence of the painter Claude Gellée dit Le Lorrain. He signed his work with the monogram "JK" in his distinctive handwriting.
He had a brother Hendrick Kobell (1751-1779), a marine painter who settled in Germany. Jan Kobell the elder is sometimes confused with his nephew Jan Kobell the Younger (1778-1814), a landscape and animal painter, and the latter's son Jan Kobell III (1800-1838), an animal painter.
