    Pierre Thuillier (Attributed to)
    Amiens, 1799 – Paris, 1858
    Mountain Landscape
    Oil on canvas
    25 x 37 cm (45 x 54 cm with frame)
Traces of a signature lower left, barely legible
    Very fine 19th-century giltwood frame
    Very good condition

This beautiful landscape is likely located in the Lyon region or near the Alps. The painting combines a certain classicism in its drawing and composition with a beautiful light in shades of yellow and pink, which undoubtedly reveals an Italian influence.

Add to this the distinctive treatment of the tree foliage, reminiscent of moss, the highly mineral quality of the landscape with its meticulous rendering of rocks that beautifully catch the light, and the small, well-drawn figures, somewhat lost in the scenery, one is reminded of painters from the Lyon school of the first half of the 19th century, such as Antoine Ponthus-Cinier, or even the painter Pierre Thuillier, who had a taste for desert landscapes in the French regions and as far afield as Italy and North Africa. For comparison, one thinks in particular of two paintings that Thuillier painted in the 1840s: his painting exhibited at the 1843 Salon, "The Way of the Tombs at Taormina" (Didier Aaron Gallery), and his "View Taken at Elbiar, near Algiers" from 1847 (Amiens Museum).
