The Belgian painter Jean Coene was the son of the genre and history painter Constantin Coene. He studied under his father at the Antwerp Academy and achieved success as a painter of Romantic landscapes featuring woods, rivers, lakes, and mountains. He exhibited at the Brussels Salon in the 1840s. Our painting is a fine example of the Belgian Romantic landscape school of the mid-19th century, with a beautiful atmosphere and a highly decorative style. We will notice the beautiful colors (the beautiful blue of the lake in particular), the great finesse in the workmanship (the beautiful painted trees and the vegetation), a beautiful composition full of details (the small houses, the boats on the lake and the characters near the large house) and the beautiful atmosphere of this painting (with in particular a beautiful distant mountain range to the right and left of the composition).
