Jules DUPRE (Attributed to)
Nantes, 1811 - L'Isle-Adam, 1889
Oil on wood panel
16.2 x 32.5 cm
As early as 1833, Jules Dupré was noted for his craftsmanship at the Salon. "His landscape, with a hedge in the middle, though imbued with the memory of Karle [sic] Dujardin, shows such a precise touch in the foliage, such a bold and powerful way of modeling the terrain, such a happy disposition of light, that one remains uncertain whether one should not abandon oneself without restriction to the hope raised by this remarkable debut" (Charles Lenormant, critic). The influence of the Flemish and Dutch masters naturally comes to mind.
In the 1840s, he met the great nature-loving landscape painter Théodore Rousseau, and they worked together outdoors and in a shared studio at L'Isle Adam.
