Jules Sanson was a French painter of the Romantic period who exhibited at the Paris Salon in the 1830s, notably of Italian subjects.
Our painting is located and dated on the back "Lake Como 1848". The scene is probably taken from a novel of the period. A young girl appears to be arriving at a monastery overlooking Lake Como, perhaps to seek refuge. On the right is a niche with a statue of the Virgin and Child.
Perhaps this is a character from Stendhal's Chartreuse de Parme, published in 1838. One thinks in particular of Clelia Conti, Fabrice Del Dongo's love, who made a vow to the Madonna never to see Fabrice Del Dongo again, who was appointed canoness and whom Duchess Sanseverina called "her young friend from Lake Como". An ancient monastery on the shores of Lake Como in Varenna, dedicated to the Madonna, still exists today.
