Léopold Survage was one of the first artists to experiment with the use of casein as a painting medium. Although its use dates back to antiquity, Survage contributed to its popularization. This medium appealed to painters for its many virtues: its ability to produce intense, matte colors, as well as its durability and resistance to fading. However, this durable medium allows for no corrections. Casein enabled Survage to experiment with mixed media techniques, achieving a rich, creamy texture in his paintings, which he sometimes combined with other mediums such as collage or tempera. He often used it to create smooth, even surfaces, as well as to layer translucent colors. Survage was known for his innovative approach to painting, and the use of casein was an integral part of his creative process.
