A beautiful, high-contrast work by the painter Gustave Vidal depicting an old farmhouse in Provence, most likely in the Alpilles mountains near Fontveille, where the artist loved to set up his easel.

In the foreground, two figures can be seen returning to the farmhouse. The background offers a clear view of a field being plowed and of the Alpilles mountains.

The artist has perfectly captured the different shades of color and the interplay of light on a winter's day in Provence, when the almond trees are in bloom and the light is still soft. The artist depicts the symbols of Provence at the center of his composition, with its almond tree in bloom and its imposing cypress.

A student at the Avignon School of Fine Arts under the tutelage of the painter Pierre Grivolas, who encouraged his students, including Gustave Vidal, to paint outdoors, he was influenced by the new Avignon school and abstract painters.

His distinctive style blends palette knife techniques with pictorial stylization. He received numerous awards early in his career and exhibited internationally.
