Hippolyte Adam is an academically trained painter of seascapes and portraits. He was a pupil of Langlois and Paul Delaroche. He exhibited during the Romantic period at the Paris Salon between 1833 and 1841 ("Les Reîtres", "The Chartreux in prayer", "Fish market in Marseille", "La Récréation"...). His seascapes are very beautiful, with a lot of movement, beautiful sea colors and full of picturesque details. In our painting, in rough seas a sailboat tows another sailboat in distress while in the distance a steamer passes by!
