Our painting is a fine example of the Norman marine paintings of Jean Mazzella, an artist active in the 1870s/1890s and considered one of the leading Norman marine painters of the Alabaster Coast. He painted the seascapes from Dieppe to Honfleur, including Fécamp, Yport, and Étretat.
The composition of our painting is beautiful, enlivened by numerous boats and figures, with a jetty, two breakwaters framing the port entrance, and seagulls. The contrasts in color of the sea are equally remarkable, typical of the colors found on this Normandy coast: the brown of the foreground, the blue-green further out, and the pinkish hue on the horizon. The numerous figures in the busy boats bring this composition to life, showing a glimpse into the lives of seafarers in Normandy in the 1880s (our painting is dated 1883).
