The boat's registration number shows "GV," indicating the port of Guilvinec in southern Finistère. A beautiful seascape by the great portrait painter Paul Mathey, who also knew how to paint beautiful portraits of boats!
Certain details, rendered in the Impressionist style, are very nicely captured, such as the small tricolor flag at the top of the boat's mast, the lighthouse and the figures on the jetty, as well as the sailor and the interior of his boat.
Paul Mathey was a French painter who worked and exhibited in Paris. A student of Léon Cogniet and Isidore Pils, he is best known for his portraits of celebrities of his time.
