Bolognese School, late 17th/early 18th century
Tancred and Clorinda (The Baptism of Clorinda)
    Oil on canvas
    46 x 54 cm (54 x 62 cm with frame)
Very fine period frame in carved and gilded wood

The style of our painting is very close to that of 17th-century Bolognese painting. It can be compared, in particular, to the art of Elisabetta Sirani and Alessandro Tiarini (Timoclea Throwing Alexander the Great's Captain into a Well, Capodimonte Museum, Naples) (Renaud and Armida, Louvre Museum).
The subject of our painting is taken from Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered. The scene depicted is that in which, on the point of death, Clorinda asks Tancred for baptism, which he recognizes as he administers it to her with water he has drawn from the fountain using his helmet.
