Son of Sébastien Leclerc II (1676-1763) and grandson of Sébastien Leclerc (1637-1714), Jacques Sébastien Leclerc, known as Leclerc des Gobelins (because he lived at the Gobelins Manufactory), was initially a painter of genre scenes like his father, even of gallant scenes and "daring scenes," as the Lorraine art historian Jeanne Lejeaux writes.
The art of Leclerc des Gobelins is recognizable by its beautiful landscapes with exquisite foliage reminiscent of 17th-century Flemish art, its vibrant and beautiful colors, and the refined elegance of its figures with their delicate, youthful faces, perfectly suited to scenes of romance! Our painting certainly illustrates one of those risqué 18th-century tales.
