Seascape by the famous painter Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941). It represents a sailboat moored at the quay.
Son of the painter-decorator of theater Charles Laloue, Eugène GALIEN-LALOUE was born in Paris in December 1854. Following in his father's footsteps, he first took lessons from Léon Germain Pelouse (1838-1891), a painter from the Barbizon School, whose codes would greatly influence Eugène's work.
His artistic training came to an abrupt halt when he lost his father at the age of 16. The eldest of nine boys, Eugène was forced to earn a living and his mother placed him with a notary. In 1870, he knowingly lied about his age and enlisted in the conflict between France and Germany. Upon his return in 1874, he was recruited by the French Railway Company to lay out the tracks from Paris to the provincial stations. Returning to his first love, he then took advantage of his comings and goings to take up his brushes again and his works were quickly noticed. Thus, from 1877, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes français and participated in numerous exhibitions.
Prodigal, he paints with assiduity various districts and large buildings of Paris at the Belle Epoque. His work includes numerous views of the Butte Montmartre, the Place Pigalle and the construction site of the Sacré-Cœur. In the company of other painters, such as Charles Jacque or Léon Dupuy (an unknown artist whose name he later used as a pseudonym), he stayed in Fontainebleau and added various themes to his work, such as sunsets and sunrises, scenes of farmyards and farmyards in the region, notably in Samois-sur-Seine. During the First World War, although he was not mobilized because of his voluntary commitment in 1870 and his age, he produced many drawings and watercolors of military scenes. He also painted landscapes of Normandy, Seine-et-Marne, Marseille, Italy and Venice.
His abundant work thus includes a multitude of varied themes. From 1893, he worked at the Bateau-Lavoir, an artists' residence in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, but his solitary nature did not suit this place. In 1940, he fled the occupied capital and settled in Bordeaux where he stopped painting after breaking his arm. He died on April 18, 1941.
Our painting is signed lower left L. Dupuy (a pseudonym he frequently used).
