BIOGRAPHY
Born in Voronezh in 1874, Paul Chmaroff discovered the "Ambulants" art movement at an exhibition there, and his future inspiration. A brilliant pupil at the town's free drawing school, he entered Repine's studio at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. Known for his historical and genre paintings, and as a portraitist of Tsar Nicholas II, he became an academician in 1916. The events of 1918 forced him
exile to Paris in 1924. He worked mainly on commission as a portraitist, executing portraits of Chaliapine and Lifar, among others, and continued to paint landscapes populated by bathers, imbued with nostalgia for his native land. Yet it was without seeing Russia again that he died in 1950 in Boulogne-Billancourt.
