A magnificent 19th-century Orthodox icon depicting the Deesis.
A very beautiful piece that has retained its superb colors.
Moscow School—19th century
The Deesis, meaning “intercession,” is an iconographic theme particularly prevalent in the Byzantine Church; it depicts Christ in glory, seated on a throne and holding a book, between the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, whose hands are outstretched toward Christ as they intercede with him on behalf of humanity.
