Beautiful mid-19th-century oil on wood panel, attributed to Charles Sellier (1830-1882), depicting Leda and the Swan.
This painting is an in-depth study of one in a private collection (see René Armellino, L'univers singulier de Charles Sellier un peintre nancéien du XIXe, cat. exp. Musée Départemental Georges de La Tour, Vic-sur-Seille, 2007, p.96, fig.68).

A friend of Jean-Jacques Henner and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Charles Sellier is considered a precursor of the Symbolist movement that developed at the end of his century. A native of Nancy, he won the Prix de Rome in 1857 for La Résurrection de Lazare. He exhibited at the Salon from 1857 to 1882.

Particularly prized, works by Charles Sellier are rare on the market.
